Andrew Manze blir ny chefdirigent för NDR:s Filharmoniska Orkester 2014/2015
Andrew Manze appointed Principal Conductor of the NDR Radio Philharmonic Orchestra from 2014/2015
The NDR Radio Philharmonic Orchestra will be under new direction from the 2014/15 season onwards: Andrew Manze will be the new principal conductor of the orchestra in Hannover. Manze, NDR intendant Lutz Marmor and NDR radio programme director Joachim Knuth signed the contract on Monday, March 25, in Hamburg.
Andrew Manze: “I am absolutely delighted and honoured to become chief conductor of the NDR Radiophilharmonie next year. The orchestra and I have worked together five times in recent years, in repertoire ranging from Bach to Hindemith, and I have always been impressed by the players' innate musicality, skill and flexibility when facing different styles of music; also its long-term commitment to young people, its adventurous programming and its audience's support and loyalty.
The orchestra is full of fine individual musicians but it is more than a collection of egos: it has a palpable sense of pride, which is well-earned after many years of high quality performances. I aim to continue that tradition: strengthening that feeling of pride; broadening and deepening the repertoire; sharing our love of great music with an ever wider audience, young and old. I would like to make our Niedersachsen audience the envy of music-lovers everywhere by showing, with our broadcasts, recordings and, where possible, tours, that the NDR has a world class symphony orchestra in Hannover.
I feel very excited about what we are starting here!”
Andrew Manze has been the Principal Conductor and Artistic Director of the Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra, Sweden since 2006, with whom he has made a number of recordings including the symphonies of Beethoven and Brahms. From the 2010-11 season Manze assumed the role of
Associate Guest Conductor of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and he was Principal Guest Conductor of the Norwegian Radio Symphony Orchestra from 2008-2011. As a guest conductor, Andrew Manze is at home on the major stages of the world and works together with orchestras such as the Munich Philharmonic, the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of Stockholm, the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, amongst others.
After studying Classics at the University of Cambridge, Andrew Manze, born in 1965 in Beckenham, studied the violin and rapidly became one of the leading specialists in the world of historical performance practice. He became Associate Director of The Academy of Ancient Music in 1996 and
subsequently the Artistic Director of The English Concert from 2003 to 2007.
Andrew Manze is a fellow of the Royal Academy of Music, London and a visiting Professor at the Oslo Academy. Furthermore, he has contributed to the new editions of sonatas and concertos by Mozart and Bach, which were published by Bärenreiter and Breitkopf & Härtel. In November 2011, Andrew Manze was awarded the “Rolf Schock Prize” in Stockholm. Previous winners include György Ligeti, Mauricio Kagel and Gidon Kremer.
